Korowai Batu and Kopkaga – tree people

Korowai batu – tree people – one of the least civilized tribes on Papua. Men wear shells of different nuts and hard seeds on their penises. Women walk half-naked, their genitals covered only with grass skirts. They decorate themselves with dog and pig teeth and with tusks of wild boars. They live in houses built in tree-tops.

Korowai Batu live in an area which is behind the imaginary „pacification li­ne“.

Korowai Batu tribe is for the larger part an intolerant tribe, which rejects civilization and contact with missionaries or neighboring tribes. Despite that, we managed to get into their territory and become to a certain extend friends with them. Our friendship is fragile, very unstable and uncertain when it comes to their part, though. Every expedition on the Korowai Batu territory is similar to our friendship with this tribe…

We get to the Korowai Batu territory through the Kopkaga tribe territory, which is another tribe from the tree people group of tribes. We finish our trekking on the Korowai tribe territory. We depart back to the civilization from there.

We organize trips to Korowai Batu and Kopkaga tribes only on order for groups of 4 to 6 people. It is of course also possible to arrange a trip for larger or smaller groups. These expeditions bear some risks depending on the route, number of days the trip takes and number of people in the group.
